Aladdin Company Annual Sales Catalogs

Tired of the same old Sears Catalog Homes? Try Aladdin! The site above has sales catalogs from 1908 to 1954, chock full of floor plans and whatnot, in pdf form. It is an absolutely great archive.

Hello Cutsocks ....missed you! So great to see you here.
Yes... the Aladdin series is great. I have a couple of those printed out for
when I get back around to building from a plan. The more simple ones are not as
scary as I thought. The older plans actually did not all account for a bathroom though.
Working one into a small house plan can be tricky.

Hey EQ!

Yeah, working from plans is quite tricky, which is why I never recreate exactly--a LOT of older catalog homes tend to have L-shaped stairs and other non-Sims-friendly features. However, the overall house shape and style and room positioning are invaluable information. There are some many times where I'm browsing user-created Sims homes and I'm like, "that's not where the kitchen goes!", "why is the front door in the kitchen?", etc., etc.

Anywho, workings from plans is all about fudging for me--omitting closets, making hallways and other areas wide enough not to cause routing problems, modifying stairs, and yes, adding bathrooms. And that house plans too small to fit in everything you need? Add-on! That's what people do in real life. Anywhere there are older homes, there are also rooms or such added onto most of them. In the neighborhood district in live, homes start from about 1900. [Though the cemetery and one brick building are on a 1868 map.] But I'd say about 80% of the homes have had a room or more added on. It's interesting to note how people did that, especially the roofing, often in the cheapest way. I find it quite fun to make homes in the Sims that look like they have been added onto over time, roof lines don't exactly match up, siding might be different, different windows, etc. It can add some history.

The later, post-war Aladdin catalogs are particularly interesting to me. In real life, these homes have not been preserved at all, as they lack the "charm" of pre-war homes. The mass vinyl siding encasing of homes has destroyed or hidden so much quirky and creative detailing. Of course that is true for all types of homes, but 50s-era ranch style are somewhat plain on shape and dependent on those nuances to stand out.

Oh my, rambling so much. Razz

I agree! Total WOW! That one on the top of a building that juts out blows my mind! So many are so fabulous. I am so jealous of people that get to own or visit places like that!

Now I want to play more to see what we can and cannot do in Sims.

Smile

Maybe we should have a build challenge to see what we can come up with using pics there as our inspiration.

Daisylee, if you want to set up a build challenge, go for it. I have been sadly lacking in ideas for a while now. Just put it into the members challenge section.

Here is a cool article on Mid-Century style and details. I love building these.

Houzz.com sends out three emails a week with American design, decorating and architecture articles. Very nice for inspiration for Sims building.

Check out this crazy huge 1800's Victorian house. Lots of interior shots and even an aerial photo. It's HUGE at 7,000 square feet.

http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/13423911/list?utm_source=Houzz&utm_campaign=u302&utm_medium=email&utm_content=gallery2

Though I have to say that the decorating is so cluttered I'd get claustrophobic in there. That's the Victorian style and though I love the houses, I'd get rid of 85% of the junk.

It would be quite a project to re-build that, wouldn't it? I wish they gave floor plans. Smile

Lovely. I guess you'll have to use your imagination regarding the floor plans.

I like it inside and out and it is not too cluttered to me. I would love to have that "junk". It is an amazing restoration.
Thanks for the link.

VERY cool desert minimalist house article. Interior and exterior and aerial view. Floor plans aren't really necessary since it tells you what is where. Article on Houzz.
