Windows 10 free to users who have Windows 7 and 8.1. Release date is July 29, 2015.
Microsoft wrote:
*Windows Offer Details

Yes, free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required; standard data rates apply. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Our lawyers made us say this:

Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own. Some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device and market. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. To check for compatibility and other important installation information, visit your device manufacturer’s website and the Windows 10 Specifications page.

1 Apps sold separately; availability may vary.

2 Cortana available in select global markets at launch; experience may vary by region and device.

3 Features only available in supported games in Xbox Live-supported countries, see xbox.com/live/countries. Limited number of games available in 2015 support cross-device play; additional games to follow. Stream to one device at a time; Streaming with multiplayer from Xbox One requires home network connection and Xbox Live Gold membership (sold separately); Gold also required for multiplayer play on Xbox One. DirectX 12 only available with supported games and graphics chips.

You can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade  here.

Free? Interesting. Good to know Sims 4 will work with it but what about Sims 3? I hesitate upgrading as I don't want to loose the ability to play the games I have, like Medieval, Minecraft, Banished......I could go on and on giggle

I'd be worried about Sims 2. I play that a lot. They are saying Windows 10 is more like 7 in appearance. As for Minecraft, I'm sure that will work just fine in Windows 10 as Microsoft bought the game from the creator. The creator of Banished keeps that game up to date. I'd hope he would also make it compatible. I'm hoping Sims 3 is new enough that it will be okay.

I'm going to ask my techie son-in-law what he thinks and if it can be undone if things don't work.

The Microsoft site has a FAQ page about Windows 10.
There is also a statement that it is available for free up to one year from release date.
Like @MerryWiddow said the games and apps already associated with Microsoft should me okay. But the best bet is to never assume. Wink
Windows Media Player will not be on Windows 10 so that could be a consideration. Not sure what if anything will take its place.
I did reserve my copy and plan to back up pictures as Sim files to an external drive.

Please pass on any information that your son-in-law may have regarding his thoughts on Win 10. I'm so nervous about this whole upgrade bit. I would just stay with Win 7 but they are phasing out any support to it so eventually I'd have to upgrade or get a new pc that has Win 10 already installed on it.

It is best to back up any files/documents/even photo's you may have stored on your pc onto an external hard drive. I'll be backing up my sims 3 files today as I don't play it that often. My sims 4 files though, I'll be waiting until closer to the release date to back up those files.
I have some other things I will be backing up between now and then also.

It has been posted on the Official forum that there are some players who have a "preview" version of Win 10 say they haven't had any issues running TS4.

If anyone is interested, here is the link to download the preview http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso

If you do decided to sign up and download the preview to Win 10 heed this warning from Microsoft:

Also another thing to check is to make sure your computer will be able to handle Win 10, that it meets all the requirements. That is really easy to do. CPUID has a free program that checks your computer and gives you the required spec's you'll need in order for Win 10 to work.

According to someone on mts Sims Asylum tested windows 10 with no problems. I hate that site and it's requirements to have an account, and it never remembers me the next time I log on anyway. Who is these people who thinks I remember passwords from time to time?

Volvenom, thanks for passing that along! I haven't gone onto MTS in...gosh I can't remember the last time I did. Maybe after the last patch came out for TS3 and I wanted to make sure any mods I had gotten from there were still updated? scratch Anyway, I hear you about the whole password issues. I have so many different passwords to places that require them, I've actually got them both written down on a piece of paper and put in my phone (only those sites that don't have any personal valuable info on me or bank account numbers).

I have been wondering about buying a new comp and have the impression windows 8,1 isn't a good buy, so I'm quite curious about how 10 is performing.

@Buttonsginger thanks for posting that! It will be interesting to see if Sims 2-3 will work with Windows 10. I for one hope so as I don't want to loose the ability to be able to play TS3 if I want to.

@Volvenom as far as I know people have been running the trial version that was released and have not had any problems playing TS4 or any issues with their computer. I feel the same way when it comes to being a guinea pig, I'm certainly concerned about it ruining my pc. I don't have the money to just go out and buy a new one or to take it into a computer place and ask them to fix it. No

I follow the recommended actions to resolve Code 80240020 (delete everything in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder)and get Code C1900208 in return.
I even tried the Media Creation Tool. It goes thru the motions up to a point but I have Webroot / Spy Sweeper Antivirus on my compuer.
Per Windows 10 information the Webroot client is not compatible. The solution offered was to uninstall it. So I used Control Panel to uninstall Webroot. Then I got the message to uninstall Spy Sweeper (original product name).
Those messages were most likely because I chose the option to KEEP my Apps and folders.
My port on my External Drive is broken so I cannot back up my files.

I kept getting the same code, I read on microsofts forum that you will keep getting those codes and update fails until it has actually downloaded to your pc. You can do the tool which bypasses waiting for the actual notice to come in, but they recommend only "expert" users do this.

I got mine in the other day, downloaded and installed and it runs great. It took me in total a little over an hour to do the whole thing the longest part was when it was transferring all my settings and files over...all 229GB of it. I have a total of 1TB on my hard drive. Wink

So far I have played The Sims 4 and have had no problems. I'm planning on checking out TS3 hopefully today.

I reinstalled Webroot Antispyware and gave up trying to force the issue.
@Mamajanaynay @Susinok
Did either of you get a notice Windows 10 was ready?
Or did you use another method to download and install?
Since my backup external hard drive is not usable I hesitate. I suppose I could try it and choose the option to only save files and folders. That would nuke all my APs.
I have Sims saved outside of the documents folder by worry I would lose that data. I would not be opposed to downloading fresh versions of Origin or Sims4. Just scared I would lose something else that I did not realize I need.

I actually checked the windows update center and noticed that it was ready. One issue I had to do was clear out all the old updates, and for the life of me couldn't tell you how I did that. Once they were cleared out it downloaded and installed just fine.

So far the only thing Windows Update shows are the regular Security updates which are successful.
It also shows "Update to Windows 10 Home" as Failed
I did try a suggestion to go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete the contents of that folder.
It does not seem to clear out old updates though. If you figure out how you did that it would be appreciated if you could share.
