I have a challenge idea.

Since uni it is easy to make friends and the family inventory is flooded with gifted items. Additionally there are the celebrity bonus gifts and the sended gifts from fellow simmers.

What would you think about a challenge - Living of Charity ?

Just live of what is gifted to you - you can sell only doubles of gifted items - maybe at certain amounts of money earned you get a voucher to spend a small amount. ....

Well, the specifics are not all clear in my head right now, but would you be interested in a such a challenge?

I like this idea. Might do a new save to see how it could work.
Not today but soon.

Re: Living Off of Charity
Random thoughts ideas etc.
How does it begin?
Empty Lot or House?
Can they keep the starting household income?
Can they be employed? Either Self employed or work part-time? I would think if they were living off of charity they would not be full time employed? At least not at first.
Collecting? It would be fun to allow dumpster diving and other types of collecting.
Lots of ideas swimming around.
This could work really well.
Just need beginning guidelines, basic rules to follow and an ultimate goal.
Don't want to overwhelm you ... just think this is a really great idea!

Thank you both for the encouraging words.

And thanks for correcting the title - Living Off of Charity - I knew it sounded not right. .lol.

I've not thought much about it yet, just wanted to know if anybody was willing to do this.

The idea came with my game lagging, which I think the overfilled personal and family inventories are part of the problem.
Well I would slow down too, if I had to carry around a dozen of stones, tons of vegetable and a tank full of fish -

Love the checklist you gave me. Will work on it.

To start I opt two scenarios: either start with an empty home, EA empty, so it does have a bathroom, and kitchen supplies, add the cheapest bed and there you go.

I could also see the possibility of having a download with the most needed on a small empty lot, which one could then place on any size lot.

I will do a little thinking, see what I come up with.

I am going to volunteer to help play test when you get a rough draft set up.
Also can Kleptomaniac Sims keep / sell their loot? After all the items are 'donated' in a fashion. Just the donor does not know it yet.

Thanks for the comments; I'm working on this -
The status right now is, that your Sim won't be allowed to have a job.
There are plenty of ways to pile up money, too many, in fact.
Since at one point during the challenge your Sim won't be considered poor anymore, I would need another title ... more along the lines - live and let live -Any ideas? I'm not certain about the goal either.
Status:
YA Sim Roll the traits, you can swap 2 traits for what you like.
(Certain traits may allow certain play options: f.e.: 'cat lover' is allowed to have a cat)
LTW: - be careful with job related LTW, you will never reach them, but choice is up to you.
Start with an unfurnished home + cheapest bed.
Keep all the rest of your money.
You will be allowed to add things according to your raising skill levels and cash funds.
You can use all the gifted items.
You can sell doubles of gifted items.

I started to work through the expansions. Updates as I progress.

Any questions to consider; something I missed? Please ask.
(Warning: I will recruit you as testers once I'm roughly through. Whistle )

EDIT: I forgot, your Sim won't be able to just collect things and sell them via inventory, so no picking flowers! Your Sim should work for the money she/he gets, except it is gifted to her/him.

Live and Let Live sounds like good title. Great outline as well. Looking forward to being recruited.

But... but .... *insert puppy eyes* Ok ... so no picking flowers to sell.
Will it be okay to rummage thru trash cans and dumpsters? And to collect only for making elixers/potions? And scrap for inventors? With the caveat that anything found not needed for such would be gifted to another Sim perhaps... [Goodbye Tiberium *sheds tear*] Crying or Very sad

This sounds interesting... but something isn't clicking in my brain... your sim can't have a job and can't make money by collecting? So...uhm.... how to make money?

PostSubject: Re: New challenge idea   Wed Apr 03, 2013 1:09 am

The idea of this is that your Sim should do something with the resources she/he got at hand.
I was tired of only sell all the gifts my Sim got from the inventory, so I thought of a way to use them in the house. You can only do this to a certain degree though. I decided it was fair to sell some. There are bills to be paid too!

collectables - that's a huge theme. I never liked that you couldn't for example sell your cooked meals cooked from your own produce. And that you pick flowers and can't make something with them.

The metals you can smelt, gems you can cut - rocks are a pest, I don't know what to do with them (as with the flowers). I kind of feel it is ... boring to just pick up something and sell it.

I'm not quite sure about the herbs and coffee beans, wether they can be used for something to make money, haven't played uni life that much.

In this challenge the Sim shouldn't get a job or profession, for two reasons:
1. it makes her/him dependent on someone else - I wanted a more free life for my Sim
2. she/he is payed a regular salray which even rises for reasons I can't see. I don't know what she/he is doing for her/his money.

And it's a challenge to go without the constant flow of a salary.

Unfortunately there are some ways your Sim could earn money, for example the tatooing station, by the work of her/his own hands; that are only available when you joined a profession. (That's the case for most of the Ambitions and Showtime interactions)
I'm not happy about this, but it's the game ...
For this challenge NO constant income.

@ EQ: Sorry about the flowers. If you can't leave them, cheat. Also if you are running out of money, who knows what one would do ... Wink
The tiberium is still yours to sell - you wouldn't sell it without cutting or growing it into a spire first anyway.

@k2: Maxing skills, will unlock the ability to sell unaltered produce and collectables. For example reaching level10 in cooking unlocks the ability to sell harvestables.
Your Sim is on her/his own and should profit from her/his skills.
Also you eventually have to get rid of the fruit and vegetables that pile up in your inventory.

---

I worked through every expansion to lay down the basic rules. At the moment I'm running a very first test to see how it works and how to define a reasonable goal.

This challenge seems to need at least the Supernatural EP, because of the possibilities to alter collectables and add value by consigning them to the alchemy chashier.

in addition:
Ambitions is great for its possibility to make Invetions from scrap; and the consignment store.
Late Night (celeb system) and Uni Life (social group friends) give you all the gifts you don't have to buy to use and you can sell the spares.

Hi Lionpaws I really like this idea and would like to suggest that with the goals maybe something like a points system for different categories. I will try to give an example.

Points for Time played

30 days = 5
60 days = 10
120 days= 15

Points for money earned

250,000 = 5
500,000 = 10
1,000,000 = 15

and so on with other variables that fit the idea. The more variables you have the better the challenge would be and the more variation in the way people play would impact the results, that's just my opinion though Smile

Great idea LMFAO!
Reminds me of that first legacy I did with Sims2. (never finished .lol.)

Maybe we should have a goal fix version, for those who like to have a set finish line.
And a variable version with a point system like you suggested. The latter you could play open end, or set yourself a score you want to achieve?
