I'd love to get my hands on the Gardening set, plus the Farmer's Market set, but I can't afford either one right now. Ah well, maybe for Christmas...Oh yes, if anyone is picking wildflowers, the Indian blanket one sells for 400 simoleans.

Yup ... I did give that a try. You can try old newspapers on the Philosophers Stone. There is a small chance to convert them to gold bars.

Those sunray things that spawn from the dancing sunflower are worth $100 each.
You may want to restrict the use of the flower; likewise the money tree.

I decided to use one flower, mainly for fertilizer, but will not have money trees.

Romero hasn't been travelling yet, but I think I remember that somewhere there is a money tree to be harvested. I'm not sure about harvesting wild money trees.

Probably best to leave the Money tree alone. Your Sim should not profit from either the Money Tree or the Fortune Wish at the Wishing Well.

The PVZ dancing Sunflower can be used of fertilizing plants. The 'fruit' of that plant should not be sold. They do provide a temporary 'Here Comes The Sun' moodlet when in personal inventory. That is part of the game so it is okay to use them for the moodlet.

In regards to the money tree, for someone trying to reach level ten of gardening or make a perfect garden they will be collecting the seeds and not know what they are until they grow...if I remember correctly. I think growing the tree should be allowed but they can not cash in the moneybags. The moneybags can be gifted to other sims. This is what I did in my original Rags to Riches.

From EA thread:
k2m1too wrote:
Okay, this may be one of those "well, duuuuh" questions, but the goal is to get your original sim to be worth §1M, not some generations down the line? (i.e it's not a legacy?)
And question 2: how do pets factor in?
LOL There are no Duuuuuh questions Laughing
Correct... the goal is for the original Sim to be worth §1M.
Pets can be added to the family. Suggest you have an established home first. They can be just a companion or a way to supplement income.
Minor Pets IE: Birds, Rodents, Snakes can be collected and sold.
Dogs and Cats can be taught to hunt or fish and the items or prey sold.
Horses can be part of the family as well. Stud fees can be quite an income boost.
I will leave limits related to Pets up to player choice. I would be interested to get additional feedback on how this works in your game. Smile

Do you think the goal to be worth §1M is too high?
Personally I am using Mini-Goals for myself:
  1. Gain 500 S to unlock transport.
  2. Have 5000 S on hand to unlock Career / Self Employment.
  3. Build (or buy) basic lot to meet stands for official 'home'.
  4. Reach financial goals in steps to have 30k, 50k, 75k, 100k etc.
  5. Gain skills and complete opportunities to advance toward LTW and other goals.
Settings:
  • Lifespan = Long
  • Seasons = Default 7 days each

Its hard to say right now if 1m is too much. I would like to complete it first and then decide. It sounds like a great challenge and I like challenge. I also like the mini goals. They give you different steps to strive for.

One million seems like a lot. My Moore family are on their sixth generation and they are not worth that much. Of course I have not been pushing them to earn money, either. They do their jobs, etc., but also do the family thing. It's not my goal for them to be super rich, although they are worth about 250,000 ish.

Example of what CAN be done financially:

This was from my third time through the "Mine" Your Own Business [aka MYOB] challenge. Take into account there were four Sims working together. They also had the advantage of using the Mining tool and finding Tiberium [I heart Tiberium!]

I had a question about the age ranges. I use a custom setting so I tried to adjust it so it fit with your challenge. This is what I currently have set

Baby: 3
Toddler: 14
Child: 20
Teen: 30
Young Adult: 45
Adult: 45
Elder: 36

Does that seem to match up ok with Long Life Span? or should I scale it back some?

Ya know ... I had to open my game to check age settings.
By doing this I discovered I was 'cheating' myself in all my saves.
What I saw as Long was only 90 Sim Days which is actually Normal span. Here is a
breakdown of the default Life Spans for each age group.

Life Stages
Short
Medium
Normal
Long
Epic
Baby
1
2
3
6
32
Toddler
2
4
7
15
75
Child
2
4

Teen
4
8
14
30
150
Young Adult
6
12
21
45
225
Adult
6
12
21
45
225
Elder
5
10
17
36
182
Total Days
26
52
90
192
964
I do not always have the patience for Infants and Toddlers get to be Toddlers until they learn all their skills.
Personally 90 days is too short for total lifespan. I got tired of trying to keep custom settings so 192 days for Lifespan plus birthday cake of triggering age transition for Infants / Toddlers works for me.

Edit: Almost forgot to answer your question .... your adjusted custom age ranges will work just fine. Wink

My Sim Lifespan is set at 115 days, I think. I lengthened kids and teens and young adults slightly. I like the kids to have time to be kids a while longer.

The actual green house has some areas where the plants go dormant. I do like the Garden Station that came with it. I have used it in a basement with great success. There is an area around the station that spawns seeds so allow plenty of space around it.

The thing about the plants going dormant in the greenhouse was a bug and has been fixed recently. You have to uninstall the set first, then re-download/re-install the new one. Basically you have to put a floor under where you put the glass roof pieces. The new pieces make the floor disappear (like putting a window in the wall, except it's on the ceiling.) (Hope that makes sense.) There was a thread about it on the forums under the "Store" section. There is still a glitch where the plants *look* frosted, but they are still active.

-----------------

I'm playing the challenge now. I'm going to be posting updates soon. I have seasons, but I didn't start out with any shelter at all. My "volun-told" just had a sleeping bag. I'm playing in Riverview, and the Gazebo park is great for camping out in. I recommend rummaging in the trashcans of the rich and famous. Big Simoleons if you are lucky. I got a chunk of compendium that was worth over §3000 once it was smelted. Then I caught a crow and another fancy bird that were worth close to §2000 §1400 together. "Cosmo" wildflowers are worth §600 apiece. Also - highly recommend the "Gatherer" and "Frugal" traits. "Natural Born Salesman" isn't bad either.

Question: Are we stuck with the lot we place the sim on to start with (like in a standard legacy) or can they "upgrade" to another lot? (Presumably after they have a home and job, etc.)

You are not stuck with the first lot. I like starting with smaller lots and working my way up. Thank you for the tips. Looking forward to your story.

I have a tip for homebuilders who are playing this challenge. I discovered that by using blueprint ahead of time, I can get an idea of how much it will take for my Sim to have a 4 room house, plus I get an idea of the layout in advance. For example, by using the cheapest rooms for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room, my Sim can have a house for a little over 8K.

Of course, you can choose to build the house one room at a time, starting with the basic (bathroom and kitchen) and working your way to the bedroom and bathroom. The wildflowers do bring in money, but my Sim was able to earn some simoleans by gambling as well. (I built a small dive bar with a couple of slot machines in it). Anyway, I thought I'd share my learning experiences. I'm enjoying reading the stories!

Great tips Momthing. Wink
I have been using some of the blueprints lately for quick builds. I did a test build on a 15x10 lot and with a few minor alterations got this.
15x10 Lot 300 S
Furnished 7,790 S
Unfurnished 6,410 S

EuphorialQueen I know you say no or low mods based via Nrass or bugs. Reading the life span post you can view that as a bug Wink

Might look in to this and give it a try SLAM V.4

You can turn it or use one of the pre-sets never worry about changing each game unless you want to.

IT also give you the option for more real life age range. + supers control.

its XML tuning mod, so no worries if they don't have what you want just make it.

I'm going to have to start over. I found out that my Sim wasn't allowed to gamble. OOPS! (per Cyron's rules)

Oh well, c'est la vie. I'm also going to pick a new town other than Sunset Valley. It should be very interesting.

Rules subject to change. Wink The point of gambling was brought up for discussion. In the very beginning it would be unlikely a Sim of low status would be allowed into a gambling establishment. At what point did you allow your Sim to start gambling?
I am going to continue my current save but Kitt has already aged to Adult and not doing as well as I had hoped in Twinbrook. There are also a few strategies I would change based on the ideas in all the stories being posted and my own experience.
