Good suggestion. I will be restarting this challenge again soon as well. I am thinking the current rules will stand as far as goals and not using money cheats like Kaching or Motherlode. However additional restrictions that will prolong game play are encouraged.
My first rule after testing with Seasons will be for my poor Sim to start with Zero shelter including No sleeping bag or tent. The official rules will still allow them but I want to try to do without. Wink
My personal rule will keep the 500 S goal before Taxis are allowed. But I am considering trying to see how long it takes to get to 5000 S before my Sim will be allowed to apply for a building permit. I have a few other ideas I want to implement from suggestions in this thread as well. I will outline them when I post the new thread.

I have to confess that I often build a basic shelter on the smallest community lot I can manage. The cheapest bed, fridge, counter, and the cheapest toilet and sink and shower. I'm thinking of leaving out the shower though, as the goal is to only have the Sim use it in inclemement weather.

My biggest problem rigt now is that I get bored easily and have never been able to complete a game. I think it's a personal hang-up I really have to work on. I'm taking a hiatus for now, and will probably do it again later.

How is everyone doing? I know I am still getting back in the regular work schedule after the holidays. Actually I have a pair of Sims ready to go at this again. The original rules do allow for more than one Sim to start so I thought I would give that a try.

Hi Smile

I would like to join this challenge, since I lost everything I did for the Rags to Riches (silly computer breakdown).

But I am confused about something. Reading the first post with all the rules, it seems that two contradict each other. I hope I'm just reading them wrong, though. If so, would you please elaborate on these two statements in the rules section:

"Goals:
#3. Make at least 5000 S to unlock self-employed option."

To me, that one reads as "Once you have gained 5000 S, you can start up as self employed". Is this correct?

"Income and Jobs:
*NO job to start... not even self-employed until your Sim has a house with the required items."

According to this, my understanding of the first statement/rule doesn't seem correct.

So my question is: When I have scrounged my way to 5000 S, am I then allowed to become self employed?
Or do I have to earn 5000 S, THEN build a home BEFORE I am allowed to become self employed?
Another question: If I start out on one of the tiniest lots, am I allowed to make a square room with a door, roof it and then delete one wall so it's more of a half roof my Sim can sleep under in her sleeping bag? I don't know how the free real estate cheat works and I'd rather not use cheats for this, it would take the fun out of the challenge for me. So can I build her a half walled-in shelter like that or? (I'm concerned about this because of Seasons)
And last question: What about classes, as in learning cooking, etc.? Can we take those as soon as we can afford them or do we have to have an established home first?
If there are no rules regarding this, I'll set myself a limit of "need 5000 S before taking classes" Smile.

I just want to be completely sure of this, so I'd be really happy if one of you could let me know.

Smile.

Up until you have 5000 S you can only make money by collecting and selling. It is your choice to sell direct from inventory or to consign goods. Smelted metals and cut gems are more valuable and worth the investment. Selling produce or fish at the grocer or donating insects and butterflies to the Science Center and playing an instrument for tips is also allowed. Wild Flowers ..... very good income! Just collect and sell immediately from inventory for the best profit.

You can make money by any means EXCEPT employment until you meet the house and money rules. If you want to start collecting painting for the Painter Career or Fish for the Angler Career etc you can do so and keep them in inventory. Then when you have met the other goals you can sell them for a mini boost to start your career. Wink

To get a self employed job (apply at City Hall) you need 5000 S PLUS the minimum requirements for a house.
Enclosed structure with a place to eat, sleep (bed) and go to the bathroom. *See description in first post.*

I do recommend the tiniest lot to be able to judge household worth at the lowest range to start. Much less math that way. In my test with Seasons I started with four walls and roof plus one door and free wallpaper and floors. She (Kitt) also had a sleeping bag. Read Kitt's story here. I quickly discovered there are enough places to nap inside that the initial shelter was not needed. I allowed Kitt to alternate between the fire house, consignment store, library and any lot that had a spot to nap. BUT she was not allowed to 'live' at the fire station or any one spot. She had to stay on the move. You can add to your humble first 'Home' as soon as you have funds. Then you can be ready to apply to City Hall for a self employed job once you meet the housing and funds requirement.

Classes are not under any limits. You can start learning Cooking, Handiness, Logic, Alchemy or even Riding by reading books at the library. And the best part is they are FREE! I agree with meeting the 5000 S before taking classes as a self limit but you can take them whenever you have the spare funds. I am happy to see that you are interested in doing this challenge. It is fun to do again and again. I hope you enjoy doing this and share your story.

Patch 1.50 has added a few items that may need to be considered. And with University out in a few days (Squeee) there may need to be a couple of updates to the rules.
Added to allow-->
Dumpster Diving: My Sim just went dumpster diving and found Tiberium and some other valuables.
Considering-->
Going to University: Waiting to see how this plays out in the game before adding this option to the rules.
My thought is minimum of meeting the Money (5000 S) and Housing Rules. Again ... since there will be all new in-game options to consider I want to play around with Uni before adding and rules or limits.

I'm playing Kermit for the first time since Uni installed, and wonder how it will effect this challenge.

What say you all?
There would have to be a criteria met first but only those required to get a job.
Example: Money at least 5000 S plus a house that meets the requirements described on the first page.
Other than that I would think you can send them to University.
How about an Optional Goal - Earn at least one Degree to complete the challenge?
A RL College student would do odd jobs or work part time to supplement tuition, buy books and supplies.
Accepting the Day Jobs and Donating would be okay as well as Posing at the Art School and are part of the Uni experience.

IP could add another twist to this saga.
If anyone wants to use IP features you may.
Tell us if you update your gameplay for this challenge.
My thought would be to start on an island and live off the land as long as possible.
There is a Landlubber Challenge from long ago that is like that.
I think it is posted in Gameplay Challenges Index.
I Got It

The outhouse one we got with the Movie Stuff would be pretty cool.
Though I don't recall anything other than a hole over a pit in the original ones. Razz

I also like this challenge and read all the rules again, probably the 3rd time,Smile , but don't feel I can take it on at this time.

That is quite alright. The hardest part (in my opinion) is setting up the basic lot and earning enough to start a house. And trying VERY hard not to do Motive cheats. Whistle
Once that is done it is just about playing the game and earning Simoleons.
